Expectations for members
Treat all club members with respect, and encourage each other to improve and develop.
Always conduct ourselves in a sporting manner, showing respect to all opponents.
Treat the club’s equipment as if it were your own; respect fellow CHBC members and their right to row with clean and well-maintained equipment.
Boats and oars can be easily damaged if used incorrectly, if you are not sure how to do something: please ask.
Opinions are welcome, but voice them constructively, and respect that a coach’s or captain’s decision is final.
Show up on time.
Be proactive in supporting squad organisation and help to maintain a unified team spirit.
Pay any money owed as soon as possible.
Safety is everyone’s responsibility.
Listen to your cox and follow their instructions whilst taking out/putting away equipment, and at all times whilst on the water.
The boat house
We are based at Clare College Boat House, 1 Cutter Ferry Ln, Cambridge, CB4 1JR. The best way to get there is to walk or cycle – there is very limited car parking in the side streets around the boathouse.
To get into the upstairs (to erg and access changing rooms), or to get into the downstairs boat bays (to row), ask your captains for the passcode. Be sure to have your Clare Hall ID on you at all times.
Our dedicated erg times are from 7-9pm on Mondays and Wednesdays. The boat house is closed after 9pm.
Safety and welfare
Your welfare and safety is very important to us, and we want rowing to be as safe and enjoyable for you as possible. Please reach out to our safety officer and/or our welfare officer for any concerns or to report any issues. If you think we can do anything to strengthen our safety and welfare processes, please also reach out to the CHBC president.
Returning members
If you rowed/coxed with us last year, you need to re-register your contact details and safety declaration before you can row again in the new year.
FAQs
Who can sub for me?
If your plans change, you need to find your own replacement; ask around on the WhatsApp group or direct message people. Non-squad rowers are also fine, just let your Captain know. If you cannot find anyone by 8pm the night before (am outings) or 2 hours before (pm outings) the outing you need to contact the captains, and the outing will be cancelled.
How are race crews set?
‘The fastest boat is the fairest boat’. Posting an erg score may be a requirement for boat selection. Crews will usually be selected based on technique, strength, commitment, availabilities, and attitude. We understand that this process can be frustrating; our aim is to make selection as transparent as possible.
Which boat can I use?
Boats to be used in crew outings will be listed in the outings sheet. Please check with your Captain if you want to take out a non-set crew boat. Use of certain equipment needs the permission of the a club captain – always ask if you are unsure.
Something is broken!
